Workshops and Conferences

February 24 Friday 6:00 PM - February 26 Sunday 3:00 PM Awakening Our Voices – Vibration, song and story in the universe of Georgian folk tales and folk songs.  A residential workshop with Frank Kane and Laura Simms,  In the Republic of Georgia, as in many cultures, folk songs and tales are consciously used as tools to maintain inner harmony and social cohesion, to heal, to make peace, to restore balance. At this workshop you will learn and sing Georgian songs and you will be invited to listen and reflect on a Georgian fairytale to re-imagine and retell your own stories. In deepening exercises with sound, vibration, speaking, story and movement, we discover how to harness sound and words as we meet each other more intensely in group singing and listening to stories. As we imagine the fantastic and symbolic quests of the fairytale, very real discoveries take place within us and between us. Every song we sing, every story we tell, every toast we make, is an opportunity to reincorporate what is most essential in our lives and to invite others to join us on this quest.

Laura Simms has been sharing with us the transformative power of stories and storytelling throughout her long and distinguished career. For this occasion she will focus on the Georgian/Caucasian tales that she finds especially rich. Frank Kane has been learning, singing and teaching Georgian folk songs for almost 30 years. He draws on the implicit technique of Georgian singers and uses exercises with sound and vibration to allow us to express and enhance our speaking and singing voices. Plan to arrive between 4 PM and 6 PM on Friday for a light dinner followed by an evening work session. Meals will be prepared by our hostess at the Roundhouse, Rebekka Tippens. Participants are requested to lend a hand with tasks such as serving and clearing tables. Workshop price including meals and accommodations (in shared rooms and alcove spaces): $375 A non-refundable deposit of $200 is requested to reserve your space for this workshop.

You can make payment by credit card or PayPal through the web site of Laura Simms (www.laurasimms.com or E-mail: laurasoffice@yahoo.com) or by sending a check for this amount to Laura Simms, 814 Broadway, New York, NY 10003. The balance can be paid in cash upon arrival. For questions about the workshop content, you can contact Frank Kane at kane.frank@gmail.com.

Travel directions to the Roundhouse are available at: http://www.roundhouseculture.com or call (413) 624-5140. Bekki will send out a welcome letter to registered participants to inquire about their dietary needs and rooming requests.

April 16 April 21 Riverway Storytelling Festival - We're coming up on ten years of stories here in the capital Region through Riverway Storytelling Festival! Our 10th annual Riverway. Look for more information at www.RiverwayStorytellingFestival.org

April 18 Wednesday 6:30 – 9:30 pm.  Michael Parent will be giving a master class for Story Circle members at Kate’s home: 8 Sandalwood Drive, Clifton Park  (approx.. 2 miles from Exit 9 off the Northway)Cost: $10 / SCCD members; Limit: 15 attendees.  Storytelling Troubleshoot This is a workshop for people who are already telling stories. Bring specific storytelling problems or challenges you are facing and Michael will assist you, often with the aid of the assembled group. The more concretely and specifically participants can state the challenges they're facing, the more likely they are to get some truly useful feedback.  For example, to state that "I'm having trouble with audience participation” is not as useful as "When I get children to participate by making animal sounds, I sometimes can't stop them." This workshop is in lieu of our April meeting. It is underwritten by Story Circle membership funds (Michael will be paid $200 from SCCD membership money plus $10 per participant.) Michael is in town as one of the featured tellers at the Riverway Storytelling Festival:  www.RiverwayStorytellingFestival.org. To reserve your space, send a $10 check, made out to “Story Circle” to: Kate Dudding, 8 Sandalwood Drive, Clifton Park, NY 12065-2700.
